Power in the Name of Jesus

This is the day that the Lord has made, and we have every reason to rejoice and be glad in it. The name of Jesus is not a familiar phrase that we say without thought. His name carries authority, salvation, healing, deliverance, strength, and victory.

There is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. When we call on the name of Jesus in faith, we are not depending on our own power, our own goodness, or our own ability. We are trusting in who He is and in what He has already done.

Acts 3 gives us a beautiful picture of this truth. Peter and John encountered a man who had been lame from his mother’s womb, and through faith in the name of Jesus, that man received strength in his feet and ankles. He stood, walked, leaped, and praised God.

The power was not in Peter. The power was not in John. The power was in the name of Jesus.

The Power of United Prayer

Acts 3:1 begins by telling us that Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer. They were not going alone. They were united, and there is power in unity.

Jesus taught His disciples to go out two by two. Ministry is not meant to be a lonely assignment. We need one another. We need believers who will stand with us, pray with us, encourage us, and agree with us in faith.

Jesus said in Matthew 18 that if two believers agree on earth concerning what they ask, it shall be done by the Father in heaven. He also said that where two or three are gathered together in His name, He is in the midst.

Agreement is more than being in the same room. It means being in harmony. The word gives the picture of a symphony, where different instruments come together and produce one beautiful sound. Each instrument has its place, but they are all working toward the same purpose.

That is how prayer ought to be. When believers come together in agreement, with one heart, one purpose, and faith in the name of Jesus, there is power.

• Agree together in prayer.
• Seek the same purpose according to God’s will.
• Believe that Jesus is present in the midst.
• Expect God to accomplish what concerns His people.

Healing can take place. Deliverance can take place. Restoration can take place. God is able to do what no person can do.

Expect Something From God

At the gate called Beautiful sat a man who had been unable to walk since birth. Each day, he was carried there to ask those entering the temple for alms. He had likely seen many people pass him by.

But this day was different. This was his day for a miracle.

When Peter and John approached him, Peter said, “Look on us.” The man gave them his attention because he expected to receive something from them. He was looking for money, but God had something far greater in store.

There is power in expectant faith. When we come to God in prayer, we should come believing that He hears us. Jesus told us to ask, and faith teaches us to expect Him to answer according to His will.

Faith moves us to respond when God invites us to trust Him. The lame man looked up because Peter and John called for his attention. Sometimes God is trying to redirect our focus. We may be looking for one kind of answer, while He is preparing to give us something deeper, stronger, and more lasting.

Do not lose your expectation. Keep your eyes on the Lord. Keep believing that He is able.

What Do You Have to Give?

Peter said, “Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee.” Then he spoke with authority: “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.”

Peter did not have money to give that day, but he had something greater. He had been given authority to use the name of Jesus.

This is a question for every believer: What do you have to give?

We may not always have natural resources, money, or the answers people are looking for. But when we have Jesus, we have hope to offer. We have prayer to offer. We have the Word of God to offer. We have the name that is above every name.

Peter did not just speak to the man and walk away. He took him by the right hand and lifted him up. Immediately, the man’s feet and ankle bones received strength.

We have to lift up our sisters and brothers. We have to stand with people in faith. We have to pray for the saints of God and call on the name of the Lord for one another.

Sometimes a person needs more than a word. They need someone to reach out a hand. They need someone to believe with them until they can stand in the strength that God provides.

Walking, Leaping, and Praising God

The man who had been lame did not remain at the gate. He rose up, stood, walked, and entered the temple with Peter and John. He went in walking, leaping, and praising God.

He did not receive his miracle and run off into the world. He went into the temple. He joined those who had brought him the good news of Jesus. There is something beautiful here about discipleship and fellowship.

When God blesses us, heals us, delivers us, and restores us, our response should be praise. We should draw closer to Him, not farther away from Him.

Everybody knew who this man was. They knew he had sat at the gate called Beautiful asking for alms. When they saw him walking, they were filled with wonder and amazement because the miracle could not be denied.

God knows how to do a work that people cannot explain away. He knows how to make His glory known.

Give God the Glory

When the people gathered around Peter and John, Peter made something very clear: the healing was not done by their own power or holiness.

That is important for every servant of God to remember. If God uses us to pray for someone, encourage someone, teach someone, or help bring healing and deliverance into a situation, the glory belongs to God.

The power is not in our name. It is not in the name of a preacher, a pastor, a president, or any other person. The power is in the name of Jesus Christ.

Peter used the miracle as an opportunity to preach Jesus. Signs, wonders, and miracles should point people to the Savior. It is a blessing to see people healed, helped, and delivered, but the greatest miracle is salvation.

People need to know Jesus in the pardon of their sins. They need to know that He died, was buried, and rose again with all power. They need to know that forgiveness and new life are available through Him.

Faith in His Name Makes Us Strong

Acts 3:16 declares that it was through faith in the name of Jesus that the man was made strong. It was not merely saying the name as words. It was faith in the name.

We must believe that Jesus will do what His Word says He will do. His name represents all that He is. He is Savior, Healer, Deliverer, Provider, Keeper, and Lord.

At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. His name is above every name. Demons tremble at His name. Every challenge must bow to His authority.

God has given His people authority to use the name of Jesus. We do not operate in our own strength. We do not try to carry out God’s work in our own name. We depend on the Holy Ghost, follow the Lord, and trust Him to show us what to do and how to do it.

Sometimes, when you do not know what else to say, just call on Jesus. There is help in His name. There is peace in His name. There is deliverance in His name. He will come to your rescue.

Salvation Is Found in Jesus Alone

The greatest need of every person is salvation. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him.

To receive salvation, we must come to Jesus in faith. We must acknowledge our sin and ask Him to forgive us. We must believe that He was born, that He died for our sins, that He was buried, and that God raised Him from the dead on the third day.

The gospel is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes. As Romans 1:16 declares, we do not have to be ashamed of the gospel of Christ, because it is the power of God.

If you confess your sins, God is faithful and just to forgive you and cleanse you from all unrighteousness. The guilt, burden, and weight of sin do not have to remain. Jesus paid the price at Calvary.

There is no other name under heaven whereby we must be saved. The name of Jesus still saves. His name still strengthens. His name still heals. His name still makes a way where there seems to be no way.

Call on the Name of Jesus

Do not let the name of Jesus become something casual. Pray with another believer in faith. Stand in agreement. Face every challenge with confidence in His authority. Call on His name in every situation.

Trust His name to save, strengthen, heal, deliver, and make a way. Then, when God works in your life, give Him the glory and tell somebody what Jesus has done.

There is power in the name of Jesus. Amen.
