BECOMING A SPIRITUAL WATCHMAN OF PRAYER

Learning to Hear God's Voice Through Habakkuk's Example

Opening Prayer

Father, as we gather to study Your Word, open our hearts and minds to understand Your call to spiritual watchfulness. Help us learn to pray with the Spirit's guidance and maintain grateful hearts in all circumstances. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Scripture Reading: Habakkuk 2:1-4

Historical Context

Habakkuk prophesied during Judah's final decades (circa 605-586 BC), witnessing the rise of Babylonian power and internal corruption. The prophet's name means "embrace" or "wrestle," reflecting his intimate struggle with God over injustice. Ancient watchmen stood on city walls or towers, scanning horizons for approaching armies, messengers, or signs of danger—a role requiring patience, alertness, and unwavering focus.

Keyword Study: "Watch" (Hebrew: mishmar)

The Hebrew word mishmar refers to a guard post or place of observation. It implies:

  • Active vigilance (not passive waiting)
  • Positioned expectancy (deliberately placing oneself to receive)
  • Sustained attention (maintaining focus over time)

Habakkuk 1:2 - By a series of question Habakkuk calls on God to set in order those in his nation who were mistreating others. His overall question is a common one: Why doesn’t a good God stop the existence of evil.

Habakkuk 2:1 – Having complete his questioning, Habakkuk stands like a sentinel to await his answer from God.

Five Keys to Hearing God’s Voice

Hearing the voice of God is the birthright of the born-again believer.

Like Habakkuk, we can take a posture before Gode that enables us to hear His voice.

  1. “I will stand upon my watch” – Meet with the Lord regularly in a special place of prayer.
  2. “I will watch to see” – Look for God to speak to you in dreams and visions.
  3. “He will say unto me” – Listen for the word of the Lord.
  4. “Write the vision” – Keep a journal of this that God says
  5. “It will surely come to pass” – Wait for God to bring it to pass

Habakkuk 3:17-19 The Walk of Faith

Habakkuk provides a beautiful picture of how to move from doubt to faith, from confusion to understanding, and from fear to hope.

Understand that it is acceptable to acknowledge the difficulty of your situation. However, like Habakkuk, focus your attention on God rather than on your circumstances.

Remember that circumstances will change, but God remains the same.

Put your hope in God’s ability to save you; He is present with you in even the most difficult of times.

Choose to rejoice in the Lord, regardless of the way you feel.

Trust that He will enable you to overcome.
